Breath Of The Wild: 10 Best Shrines, Ranked

Aug 05, 2023Aug 05, 2023

Shrines in Breath of the Wild can be very easy or very challenging. Here are the best ones to jump into in your journey across Hyrule.

Breath Of The Wild was a departure from the standard Legend Of Zelda formula for a lot of fans. It offered a lot of survival mechanics as well as an open-world, sandbox style of gameplay that Zelda fans were not accustomed to in previous installments.

Another big change was the addition of shrines. These were essentially mini-dungeons that challenged players and allowed them to level up. They varied greatly in style and difficulty, and some were so hard to find that players were rewarded just for reaching them. The shrines' variety led to a lot of players favoring some over others. Here's a list of some of the best in the game.

This is a shrine of power that completely embodies what it means to be a mini-dungeon. It involves a lot of use of stasis and magnetism to unlock certain doors and progress through the shrine. Perhaps the best puzzle is when players have to be quick to sling a boulder across a gap before freezing to unlock the next door.

Finally, it ends on a fun note as Link is catapulted up into the air and has to float toward the shrine's end.

Besides having to complete a fun shrine quest with Gorons to access it, this shrine is great for its simplicity. It's nicknamed Greedy Hill. One look at the shrine, and it's easy to see why. The objective is to just run up a very steep incline while avoiding some obstacles that are rolling down in your way.

It gets its "greedy" name from the fact that rupees fall down, as well. The shrine gets infinitely harder the greedier the player gets, which is a nice dynamic from other shrines that just involve puzzles and fighting.

Here is a shine that is as fun as it is challenging. It also has a gameplay mechanism that is eerily reminiscent of Zelda dungeons in the past. The premise is simple: Link has to move a blue flame along the dungeon all the way to the end. However, it's a lot more difficult than it sounds as there are many obstacles in the way.

Sometimes Link has to carry the flame on a torch. Other times, he has to shoot the flame with an arrow across the room. Either way, the dungeon is fairly time-consuming, and the player has to be patient in order to make sure the flame doesn't extinguish prematurely.

The Zelda team really does have a knack for creating mini-dungeons that are as rewarding as they are difficult. Sharo Lun is no different. The idea behind this shrine is that blocks are dangling under a moving conveyor belt.

Link has to jump or climb onto the blocks as they move while avoiding obstacles such as flames and spikes. It can get tricky at times as Link has to jump off the blocks at various points. It's always difficult having to accomplish tasks at the game's pace rather than your own, but it's also a fulfilling challenge.

Shrines are fun when they deal with a lot of puzzles and maneuvering, but they don't have to. Sometimes they just have to be easy to navigate while dealing with a lot of foes. The Ruvo Korbah shrine is just that. Link acquires the One-Hit Obliterator before heading in, which makes defeating the Guardians super easy.

The only unfortunate side is there's no room for error. One hit and Link will die, as well. So it's just a good old-fashioned "defeat the enemies" mini-dungeon that can be pretty fun.

Just as shrines can be both difficult and fun at the same time, they can be easy and fun at the same time, too. This shrine doesn't offer so much of a challenge, but it's still rewarding to accomplish.

The idea is a ball has to roll all the way down a slide from top to bottom. Link's job is to maneuver the slide so that the ball can get there. It's not too time-consuming or much of a brain-teaser, but watching the ball roll is oddly satisfying.

The awesome thing about these shrines is that they test the player on multiple levels. Some are about fighting. Others are about navigation. This shrine is a simple puzzle-solving challenge. Although it's not explicitly explained, the player has to figure out how the constellations along the walls figure into opening the doors.

It's also not as straightforward with one simple solution. The puzzle can unlock multiple doors, which allows the player to access chests, as well. Of course, players can cheat by just looking at a guide online, but it's more fulfilling to figure it out without help.

It might seem strange to call a shrine-level peaceful, but that's kind of the feeling this one gives off. It starts with a long ladder and a switch that lulls the player into a sense of simplicity. Then, the player is dropped into a chamber where they have to navigate around a series of platforms while using wind currents to fly.

It's a bit challenging, but nothing too intense. In fact, flying around the room while riding the currents gives off a sense of easing calm that makes the shrine pretty fun.

This is a shrine that could be incredibly frustrating if the player doesn't know exactly what to do. But once Link figures out how to reach the end, it becomes a challenge to utilize all the tools at his disposal.

The basic idea is that Link has to essentially build a staircase out of blocks that he has to climb. It forces players to think quickly and puzzle-solve while also being able to swiftly switch back and forth between gears. It might take a while to figure out, but it's a very satisfying shrine to solve.

There's just something about navigating a dungeon filled with traps that give off a sense of adventure. It's what makes things like Indiana Jones so popular. This shrine is as close to that feeling as Zelda can get.

There are several different rooms, each one with a different series of obstacles that Link has to overcome. There's no fighting, just being able to quickly outwit the traps and obstacles while utilizing links abilities. It definitely gives the feeling of a proper Zelda mini-dungeon. Players just have to purchase the DLC to get it.
